Sr. Television Technician

Starting Salary Range: $50,052 - $54,996

Overview:

The ETS Audiovisual (AV) Design and Engineering Group installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs equipment in general assignment classrooms. The department also oversees the campus broadcast studio and maintains a large inventory of production-level AV equipment as well as portable AV equipment for classroom instruction. This position’s primary focus is maintenance and repair of AV/IT equipment in general assignment classrooms. Incumbent will be responsible for night operations.

The program is overseen Educational Technology Services (ETS), the central campus department supporting technology for teaching and learning in classrooms, online via the bSpace Collaboration and Learning Environment, and globally via Webcast.berkeley.edu, videoconferencing and broadcast studio facilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Exercise independent responsibility for maintaining AV/IT technology installations under general direction and act as work leader for one other technician and 4 to 8 student employees
  • Interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, and verbal and/or written directions to execute projects of varying complexity , including installation, fabrication, modification, repair, preventative maintenance
  • Stage, install, troubleshoot, and repair AV and Information Technology (IT) analog and digital technology systems and equipment. Inventory and maintain equipment and stock levels of spare parts for Technical Services and Operations functions
  • Provide guidance and solutions to staff, faculty and students for the correct installation and operation of equipment and video-data displays in lecture halls and classrooms

Requirements:

  • Education in Engineering and Electronics
  • Ability to work nights
  • Minimum of two years experience installing and repairing digital and analog audio visual equipment
  • Knowledge of basic audio and video engineering technology, including current standards and practices for interconnection, transmission, and storage in the analog and digital domains
  • Experience in signal communications, audio/visual control systems, video and data projection systems, compressed video technology, design/maintenance of broadcast television systems, and/or Ethernet data transmission
  • Knowledge of network data transmission protocols and transmission standards, and standard analog/digital wiring configurations such as Ethernet, AES-3, composite video, RS 232/422, and standard analog audio connections
  • Knowledge of grounding and shielding techniques
  • Experience reading blueprints and schematic diagrams for troubleshooting, repairs, and preventive maintenance
  • Proficiency with soldering, wiring, cabling, and using testing/measuring equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital volt meters, signal generators, cable testers
  • Experience with hand tools, and equipment installation techniques and practices
  • Knowledge of construction techniques and hardware
  • Knowledge of wiring standards, including interconnection, cable pulling, labeling systems
  • Must be able to move, lift, crawl, reach and navigate on a ladder
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills
  • Effective communication, time management, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability and interest in learning new technology
  • Ability and assess and learn from mistakes
  • Ability to independently plan and execute work while functioning as an effective team member
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite programs

Training and Support Manager

Starting Salary Range: $52,204 - $80,000

Shape the learning environment at UC Berkeley! The Training and Support Manager for Educational Technology Services (ETS) is responsible for defining, implementing, and overseeing the support, training, and instructional design services provided to faculty, Graduate Student Instructors, and staff in their implementation of the available learning systems. This vibrant community is eager to use online collaboration and learning tools to facilitate activities in and out of the classroom. Currently, online activities include engaging students to build a collective glossary of terms, creating a space to share online journals, taking advantage of webcast and podcast services to reach a global audience, and using polls to quickly gauge the level of understanding of a topic.

ETS relies on the Manager of Training and Support to understand the goals of the various individuals and groups at UC Berkeley, evaluate tools that meet those needs, and deliver features that are easy to use. This effort serves the needs of the local campus and has a global impact. bSpace, the online collaboration and learning environment supported by ETS, is UC Berkeley's version of the Sakai platform (http://sakaiproject.org). In addition to working closely with teaching faculty, this position is poised to work with researchers and departmental staff to define the right collaboration tools for the campus.

The incumbent is also responsible for defining and maintaining the ETS instructional technology development program for faculty. This includes designing appropriate support and feedback structures, targeting departmental partners for participation in user outreach studies, and identifying new tools to pilot.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum three years of project management and team leadership experience
  • Minimum three years of designing curriculum and facilitating instructor-led courses
  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to interact with constituents ranging from individual faculty to campus leaders
  • Ability to articulate and implement compelling team vision and goals
  • Technical understanding of the development requirements of web-based multimedia and learning systems
  • Understanding of the theory and practical application of instructional design methods
  • Ability to thrive in an evolving work environment
  • Understanding of the techniques required to provide technical trouble-shooting for learning systems applications, including managing Quality Assurance testing and providing end-user support
  • Ability to solicit new ideas and develop effective collaboration partnerships across campus
  • Experience performing needs assessment and gathering user scenarios
  • Ability to prioritize work tasks, both for the team and for self

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Instructional Design or other applicable field
