UC Berkeley partners in Community Source Effort on the Fluid Project
In April 2007, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announced an award for $2.5 million in support of a two-year collaborative UI project, called FLUID. The FLUID project will help universities internationally provide more consistent and accessible web services to all users, including those with special needs. UC Berkeley’s Educational Technology Services will lead the user experience design methodology for web application development The Adaptive Technology Resource Centre (ATRC), housed at University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information Studies, is leading the overall project. The project's other core partners are the University of Cambridge (CARET), University of British Columbia, and York University (in addition to many other participating universities world-wide). Corporate partners include IBM, Sun Microsystems and Yahoo, and participating community source software projects include Sakai, uPortal, and Kuali Student. The project will work closely with the three community source projects to develop and distribute modular and re-useable interface components for web applications and build the software architecture to support their implementation. “Using this approach the project hopes to pave the way to a consistent user experience across the academic software enterprise. Making it easier for students, staff, and faculty to easily move from paying their tuition in their student system to reviewing their grades in Sakai (bSpace). UC Berkeley is playing a lead role in establishing the user experience design methods and will be especially engaged in using FLUID as a platform to marry user-centered design to the application of rich UI components. Through the development and support of “U-camps” the team will strive to raise awareness in academic web culture about the methodologies and roles required to support good interface design. [More]
