Overview of the Project

An ambitious project to improve 29 general assignment classrooms in Wheeler Hall began at the end of the Fall 2006 semester.  The Wheeler classroom upgrade and renovation project represents the campus commitment to teaching and learning environments.  Wheeler Hall will be done in three phases over the course of the year.  The improvements are being made under the auspices of the Campus Committee on Classroom Policy and Management, currently co-chaired by Vice Provost Catherine Koshland and Vice Chancellor Genaro Padilla.  “I am very gratified the Chancellor has allocated funds to substantially improve the quality of our general assignment classrooms.  This project will benefit a large number of students and faculty members,” said Koshland.  Vice Chancellor Padilla expressed his feeling about the project when he said; "We look forward to making these much needed improvements to our classrooms.  We're the best research university in the world and our students deserve world class facilities as well!"  Educational Technology Services and the Office of the Registrar will manage the improvement project.

During the winter break, phase I involved the infrastructure upgrades ensuring conduit paths for electrical, IP networks and audio/visual equipment.

Phase three will take place over the summer and involves the aesthetics; painting, replacing chalkboards, furniture, shades, etc.  By the end of the summer, all of the General Assignment Classrooms in Wheeler Hall will be 100% installed with audio/visual technology.

Network and Electrical Upgrades
Many of the power circuits in Wheeler Hall were outdated and shared between offices and classrooms.   The first phase of the renovation project included adding updated panels with each classroom on its own circuit.

Interior Design Improvements
The Office of the Registrar plans to upgrade all Wheeler classrooms with new furniture, blinds, screens, paint, electrical systems and lighting.
