bSpace, UC Berkeley's implementation of Sakai , is an online environment that allows members of the campus community to connect, learn, and collaborate in both a course and project setting. Since the introduction of bSpace to the campus in Spring 2006, instructors are making use of the various tools in bSpace to share class materials with students, manage and distribute grades, and create a common space where students can contribute their ideas to share with the class. In addition to supporting classroom learning, many staff have adopted bSpace to support their committee work and cross-campus projects. The convenience of logging in with your CalNet ID coupled with the ease of creating sites independently has helped shape the successful adoption of bSpace at UC Berkeley.

Planned Enhancements: Fall 2007

  • An upgraded discussion board tool that is easy to manage
  • Group specific areas in Resources, Discussion, Assignments, Quiz & Survey
  • Display of student enrollment status (enrolled, waitlisted, etc.)
  • Automatic inclusion of concurrent enrollment students in course rosters
  • Option to automatically generate sections based on Registrar-defined data for labs, discussion sections, etc.
  • Display of student photos
While ETS plans to include the enhancements listed above in the Fall 2007 version of bSpace, due to resource limitations, some enhancements may not be available until later semesters.
