Best Practices

Course and Event Webcasting

Using technology to automatically encode video and distribute to a public website, webcast.berkeley offers 30-40 courses each semester for live and/or on-demand viewing. Beginning in Fall 2002, ETS began webcasting special events to bring the best of Berkeley to a wider audience.

webcast.berkeley: Live and On-demand Courses and Events

Visit the webcast.berkeley website for scheduled and archived courses covering Biology, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Nutritional Science, and Computer Science.

Events range from Stephen Hawking's talk in March, 2007, Bill Clinton's visit in January, 2002, photographer Sebastaio Salgado speaking on his "Migrations" exhibition, and the popular Lunch Poems series.

Interviews with Berkeley Economists

Rather than webcast his Economics 1 class, Professor Kenneth Train supplements his coursework with webcasts of his interviews with Berkeley economists including two Nobel Laureates.

Chemical Engineering 157 Labs

Having chemistry labs available via webcast frees instructors and students from scheduling labs every semester.

Instructor Profiles

These Instructor Profiles offer ideas on how educators have used webcasting to extend the reach of their course beyond the classroom's four walls.

Using the Web to Meet Increasing Enrollment

Chemistry Professor Alex Pines and Dr. Mark Kubinec have combined webcast technology with a robust course website to anticipate an increased demand for their course.

Bringing Back a Very Old Method with Technology's Help

Computer Science/IDS Lecturer Americ Azevedo adapted a commercial product to facilitate Socratic dialogue on his course website, then paired it with his webcast lectures.

Keeping Pace with Fast-breaking Current Events

School of Public Policy Visiting Professor Reid Cushman spans the distance between Florida and Berkeley with the help of teleconferencing and NetMeeting.
