Webcasting (webcast.berkeley.edu)

Webcast Logo
ETS provides live and on-demand webcasts of courses and events in streaming video and audio for the University community and beyond. Much of this content can be viewed through webcast.berkeley (http://webcast.berkeley.edu).

webcast.berkeley began as BIBS (Berkeley Internet Broadcast Service), a research project by the Berkeley Multimedia Research Center (BMRC) to webcast select UC Berkeley courses. With the help of Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Paul Gray and e-Berkeley, BIBS evolved into webcast.berkeley as a regular, automated production service. ETS and Academic Computing Services of Information Systems and Technology (IST) partner to operate the service.

Beginning in 2001, webcast.berkeley worked with Public Affairs to expand its coverage to include special campus events, inaugurating this service with former President Bill Clinton's address. In Fall 2002, webcast.berkeley/events officially launched, providing the world a window into UC Berkeley.

Some inspired uses of webcasting can be found on our webcasting best practices page. Included are some unique applications of webcasting for courses and events, and articles on how some faculty have integrated webcasting into their coursework.

To learn more about the webcast system's history, technology, goals, and statistics, visit the Webcast Reports section for various papers and online PowerPoint presentations. An overview of Webcast Statistics is also available.
