Opencast LogoOpencast refers to the Opencast community and a set of projects that have been initiated through community efforts. The Opencast Community is a collaboration of higher education institutions working together to explore, define, and document podcasting best practices and technologies. The Opencast community offers guidance and information to help others choose the best approach for delivering rich media online.<!--break-->
The most notable project is the Opencast Matterhorn Project, an initiative led by UC Berkeley to build an enterprise-level, easy-to-install open source podcast and rich media capture, processing and delivery system. The Opencast Matterhorn Project is funded by grants from the Andrew J. Mellon and William and Flora Hewlett Foundations, and is a collaborative effort among thirteen North American and European institutions, and led by Berkeley under the leadership of ETS' Director of Educational Technologies, Mara Hancock.
